Is it the end for the Webmaster?
According to many sources the Webmaster position as we known it, could be over, but as with many Internet jobs, the job may change but the work goes on. The Webmaster of old who built a site by hand from scratch could well in the minority these days. But there will always be a need for those who wish to move on with the times.
The problem is three fold; Web 2.0 has made the net into a place where anyone who has the desire to have a little space on the net can without much cost or technical knowledge. Before, the Internet was the new world, but now it is more like open house with almost everyone welcome.
Another aspect has to be technical knowledge, there are so many Website creators that come with hosting packages, which makes designing your own Website as easy as child’s play. Plus the rise of developers in India and now China has driven the prices so low, that it is virtually impossible for western webmasters to compete on an even plain.
But finally it has been the finance, price rules and whoever can deliver the best package for the lowest price wins. So at the end of the day it is cost, whether it is the cost of designing a site, running a site or software. With Web 2.0 cost is minimal and anyone can play.
