University records stolen by hackers

The University of California at Berkley Heath have announced that their health services division has suffered a severe breach of security and that there is a possibility of over 160,000 records of people involved at the university getting into the wrong hands.

Around 97,000 records contain the details of social security numbers were stolen, although it is believed that these numbers and the corresponding names were in separate files, so the hackers may not be able to match the two.

Unbelievably the attack began in October 2008 when hackers went through a public site and gained access to the servers, the attack continued until April of this year, when IT staff started routine maintenance.

As of yet there is no sign that there has been any ID theft.
